Demand for Disposable Gloves Will Not Be Easing Anytime Soon

With flu season upon us and COVID-19 likely to spread even further, demand for disposable gloves will remain at all-time highs.

Average sales prices of disposable gloves are going in one direction only: up.

The increased need for gloves worldwide, due to both the COVID-19 pandemic and a greater general awareness of health, safety, and hygiene, drives demand. Manufacturers simply cannot produce enough gloves to satisfy their customers.

COVID-19 is not going away, and if predictions are to be believed, its spread will increase this fall and winter with the arrival of flu season.

Disposable Glove Supply Shortage Keeping Prices High

In these times of soaring prices, vinyl disposable gloves offer great value in both medical and industrial applications.

Average sales prices of disposable gloves, regardless of material type—nitrile, latex, and vinyl—are going up. Shortages of raw materials also constrain latex and nitrile production, which puts additional pressure on pricing.

The increased need for gloves worldwide continues to drive demand, due to both the COVID-19 pandemic and a greater general awareness of health, safety, and hygiene. Glove manufacturing’s inherent limitations—raw materials, labor, and capacity shortages—constrain supply.

In 2020, demand for disposable gloves and personal protective equipment is at all-time highs. The global spread of the novel coronavirus has completely taken over the conversation—and the market—as glove manufacturers struggle to keep the supply chain moving.

Also on the rise, of course, is the cost of doing business. With shortages of raw materials and labor, and restrictions on who gets priority access to PPE, glove prices are going up. It’s not a matter of gouging, but simple economics: demand rises, supply drops, gloves get more expensive.

Medical Gloves Defined

Exam-grade gloves, often referred to as medical gloves, were originally designed for non-surgical medical procedures. They differ from industrial-grade gloves due to one factor: rigorous factory-level testing. This testing is based on acceptable quality limits (AQL) set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. An AQL limit sets a standard for how many gloves within a batch can fail testing. A low AQL (meaning a small number of defective gloves) for exam-grade gloves is necessary to ensure the glove is of a high enough quality that it can provide the proper barrier protection against extreme risks.

How Manufacturers Test Glove Quality

Given the many uses for disposable gloves, they must undergo rigorous inspection before they are ready for sale. In the automotive, janitorial-sanitation and agricultural industries, workers deal with a number of harsh chemicals, which means the gloves they wear must be proven to provide the right amount of protection. The same is true for medical applications, where employees need a safe barrier against pathogens.
